The Mercenary Pack Saved Guild Wars for me
Hey everyone...I'm an altoholic. I have 23 Guild Wars characters. A while back, my account was hacked and I lost, pretty much everything. I was pretty upset.
The worst bit of it was that the hackers removed every rune of value I had from pretty much every character, breaking elite armor pieces left and right without thought. I logged in to 23 character, most of whom had armor pieces missing. Of course obsidian and vabbian armors were salvaged for mats and completely gone. I was horribly distraught.
I left for a while. I couldn't look at them. And I certainly couldn't bring myself to rerune heroes on 23 characters. I went to other games and found out what I'd known all along. There is nothing out there like Guild Wars. At least that was true for me.
I found my solution in the Mercenary Pack. I made my eight favorite characters heroes, and now, they're pretty much the only characters I need to rerune on a single character that I play. I get to hang out with my eight favorite characters ALL AT THE SAME TIME! I'm happy as a clam.
Better still, for a player like me whose characters are real, there are plenty of options to let me customize the "mood" of those characters. This changes the random dialogue they say during the game. This feature alone was worth the price for me.
The Mercenary Pack saved Guild Wars for me. I can log in, play with all my guys and not worry that I have 22 characters with heroes who aren't runed.
Naturally as runes drop, I can ressurrect my other favorite characters as I go along, but at least I can play again.
Thank you Anet for introducing the Mercenary Pack!

Had a similar issue, I had an account with a bunch of characters, a FoW warrior and a ton of expensive mini pets. I quit... lost access to the e-mail and Anet won't do anything for me even though I know my e-mail + characters. It stopped me from wanting to play... years later I've started over and now playing again, still totally noob on all of my toons.
Glad to hear you found something to work for you.

Hi nagennif,
I remember your thread a few months ago when you were hacked. I am glad you have found a way to get back into the game, you are right there is nothing like GW. Good Luck
I have not had a merc so I have no idea what you mean about changing the mood of the chars.

Nice to read the story, I have to admit that is a good use of mercs.
On a side note, 23 chars??? wow, and I tought I was bad. I still have the vanilla 8 or 10 slots (full game no char slots), 4 or 5 are statics, rest keep being remade.

"When creating your mercenary, you will have the opportunity to choose a personality trait from a list. This will generate the quotes for the hero as you travel and fight in an instance. Possible personalities include: "
I forgot about that feature. Pretty nice.

That is a excellent way to get back into the game. Glad to see things worked out for you. Thank goodness they didn't delete your characters as well.

I guess my story isn't as heartwarming, but the merc pack has made GW a little more interesting for me, especially with the Winds of Change content right now.
Playing a new necro through the Factions content with 7 merc heroes all dressed in Ministry of Purity uniforms gives a completely different slant to the storyline. Instead of just playing through it as a former random student from Shing Jea, it's more as if you're being an operative for the Dragon Empire and bring the one eliminating the threat.
And bringing the char across to other campaigns does give that feeling as well. I suppose it's akin to creating some sort of additional roleplaying relevance and viewpoint of looking at a character's motives when aiding the various NPCs.

a quick question for those with that pack
when you do a quest that your main needs but also the some of the mercenarys do, do they get quest updated?
example: i do "welcome to cantha" on the main character while one of the mercenaries has the quest but never completed it. when i relog and log on that mercenary character as on main, would that quest be completed for him?

Negative, in the long run they are just heroes that look like your other characters.

You just choose name and appearance.
They behave exactly like the rest of the heroes for anything else.

The mercenary pack also bought me back to this game and I have enjoyed it ever since I bought it. I have 15 character slots, 10 were wasted on PVP characters well before the J button (/rage!), and just 5 PVEs.
All my PVE characters have elite armor, and I really enjoy being able to have them all in my group at the same time with the same builds I actually use on them when playing them.
I find myself using my monk and paragon as heroes, even when I previously wouldnt have done this because I like other classes more, but having them as mercs with nice armor makes me want to play with them.

Sorry to hear you got hacked, I did myself recently by gold scammers and it really does suck to lose items you have worked hard for, especially if you're the kind of player like me who plays quite sporadically so it takes me a long time to get things. I wish there was some way of protecting your accounts more easily, hopefully anet are thinking of things like this for gw2 as I'm sure more people have been getting hacked recently.
But yeah mercenary pack is a great idea, yet to purchase it yet but I'm sure I will soon

Okay, I have a possibly stupid question..
Why would I want to pay to use my other toons as mercenary heros rather than my regular heros?
Isn't the AI for the mercenaries basically the same as heros? It's not like you're playing them, they're tagging along just like 7 heros. They'll still stand in AOE unless you flag/micromanage. Right?
I only have 10 toons in all, but after four years of playing all the heros for each toon is totally pimped out. So... unless you're in the predicament of the OP... why mercenaries?

Two reasons:
-They're your characters, which is generally better in a cosmetic sense. They're identical AI-wise.
-They allow you to any combination of professions you like. For example, you can't have 3 Rits without them.

Actually, since my rit is my favorite character, I've done three rits with Xandra and whats-his-face.
I understand your reasons, Marty. But for an average player, it's still not reason enough to spend all that money just to see your beloved toons act semi brain-dead.

I purchased the Mercenary Pack and was disappointed to find they were just plain heroes, that is they had to be runed all over again. I don't know how you change their dialogue. I didn't' see that.

Really? Ugh! Then it's definitely not worth it to me. My heros are competely runed out and carry either perfect gold weapons or very nice green weapons. Several have green weapons from Peacekeeper drops. I could always strip these and rerune my mercenaries, but it's just not worth it.
I am glad that the mercenary packs made the hacked player come back though. I feel like I've lot my sense of purpose so I've been off playing Rift, but in general GW is a better game. GW2 needs to come out soon.
